UPDATE: You can send your cell phones in too, visit the
collectivegood website.
This is an example of a program we LOVE to watch take shape. Big KUDOS to Rock the Earth for taking the initiative to encourage fans to recycle their cell phones. If you're heading to the Outside Lands Music Festival please consider bringing your old cell phones to the festival to recycle them. And even if you're NOT going to the festival, this is a good time to think about grabbing your old useless cell phones out of your drawer and taking them to a place to recycle (many U.S. post offices now do this, look for the little green bags there).
(Denver, CO) Environmental advocacy organization Rock the Earth have announced that they will be leading the cell phone recycling campaign at this year’s
Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival in San Francisco (Aug 28 – 30).
In partnership with Musictoday, Collective Good and Gibson, Rock the Earth’s mobile phone recycling campaign is part of the festival’s
Eco Lands Passport which encourages green minded rockers to obtain “stamps” for doing certain activities. The program serves to keep fans engaged with the festival’s environmental initiatives and gives participants the chance to win the opportunity to watch Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band or Tenacious D from the soundboard. Pick up your passport at the Eco Lands Info Booth and get stamps for biking or taking MUNI to the festival, recycling your old cell phone, registering to vote, volunteering with PG&E and more.
Did you know that there are more than 1 Billion mobile phones waiting to be recycled in the US? Or, that one (1) mobile phone contains enough toxic substances (lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, etc) to contaminate 40,000 gallons of drinking water? Or, that an estimated 175 million new mobile phones will be issued this year in the US, yet less than 1% ever get recycled?
All festival attendees who bring a phone to the Rock the Earth booth for redemption will
receive 20% off a future Musictoday purchase and entered into a daily drawing for CDs, DVDs, festival merchandise and one lucky Outside Lands mobile phone recycler will win a Gibson guitar! What are you waiting for? The more phones recycled, the less toxic chemicals threatening America’s most precious natural resource – our drinking water supply!!
Rock the Earth is a national 501(c) (3) public interest, not-for-profit environmental advocacy organization dedicated to protecting and defending America’s natural resources.
