The floods that have submerged large areas of Pakistan are the worst in living memory. Direct results from the floods: submerged roads and bridges cutting off survivors from critical supplies of medicine, food and clean water. 20 million people have been affected – more than the number of people affected by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, and the 2010 Haiti earthquake combined.

890,000 homes have been destroyed, and 2.6 million acres of crop lands are under water. With their homes and livestock lost, millions of families have had their lives turned upside down. Displaced families are camping on roadsides. Many lack shelter, food, and clean water.

Here are two ways you can help:

1) Oxfam is working to reach more than 650,000 survivors with essential aid – in the face of major logistical challenges. To donate to Oxfam’s Flood Relief & Recovery Efforts go to http://bit.ly/PakistanRelief

2) Music For Relief - MFR is partnering with the UN Refugee Agency to help provide shelter and life-saving aid to millions of people in need.

Our goal is to reach and serve 560,000 survivors, but we need your ongoing support.

Make a donation to help victims of the Pakistan Floods today. Go to www.musicforrelief.org/donate to make a contribution. 100% of your donations will help survivors in Pakistan; MFR is matching individual donations
up to $10,000 for this recovery effort.

"There are approximately 6033 MT [metric tonnes] of obsolete stocks of POPs pesticides (3800 MT Punjab, 2016 MT Sindh, 48 MT NWFP, 135 MT Balochistan, 31.5 MT AJK and 0.5 MT Northern areas). Large stocks of obsolete pesticides are situated in areas of intensive cash crops/ agricultural activities. Since stockpiles are located in towns or villages and near water bodies, there are potential human health and environmental risks.” - National Implementation Plan (NIP) for Phasing Out and Elimnation of POPS from Pakistan under Stockholm Convention

Persistent organic pesticides (POPs] are both water soluable and volatile - they dissolve into the water and vaporize into the atmosphere. If their containers are opened, there is a risk they could contaminate the flooded agricultural lands.

POPs also become bioavailable, meaning organisms can absorb them into their own bodies or structures. In this way, they may enter the food web. Once they get into organisms, they biomagnify up the food chain, with higher loadings appearing in higher organisms. Humans stand high up in the food web - especially those who eat animals and fish. POPs are lipophilic, meaning they stick to fatty tissues in the animals they contaminate.

And POPs travel long distances. If Pakistan´s POPs pesticides are released into the environment, the entire planet´s loading of POPs will increase, putting everyone at greater risk of exposure to POPs.
