That's horrible, thanks for the post, my son's in high school and it's really frightening to know what kids have to deal with these days. There definitely needs to be more awareness of this and other problems, as well as more fulfilling activities for teens. I'd love to start a cultural center for kids after school, where they can go and paint, play instruments, sculpt, sew, cook, whatever creative interests they may have....free of charge. Surely there are such places, maybe just not as appealling to kids as they could be...of course, that won't stop inner city gang violence, but maybe having a creative outlet (for those who otherwise wouldn't have the means) would help some rise above.
It's a great thing that you raise awareness to this topic! More people need to be informed about it and how they can help.
Here in Germany it's at least as terrible as in the US. In the last two or three weeks we had a lot of fights. One man was beaten up by two teenagers in an underground station because he defended some children. He died before the ambulance came. A week later the same happened two a young couple (in the same town!). Luckily they're both still alive. And just a few days ago a teenager was beaten up by two others and about 20 witnesses just stood there and watched it all! How horrible is that?! Couldn't these 20 people take action and help the victim? Aren't 20 people more than the two offenders?
I think there's a lot to do to prevent situations like these.
Well said. Back in my day, I had many responsibilities after school, including work, homework club, sports practice, dance practice, etc. etc. that kept me busy and for the most part, out of serious trouble. It helps to have a Big Brother or Sister for those kids who don't have a close adult in their lives, what with many orphans and working parents: www.bbbs.org/site/c.diJKKYPLJvH/b.1539751/k.BDB6/Home.htm I encourage all to support Big Brothers and Sisters in your area and volunteer to become one. If you have teenagers or young children, sign up! It's a fabulous program with proven results and it creates community and confidence in our youth.
